Our hostess Sarita Verma set us up with urn, cold drinks and snacks within the room, so that players were not lacking in anything. An appetizing Indian meal was served in the playing area in the evening, after game 13, to those players who elected to partake.
The tournament ran most smoothly, without the need for result slips or challenge slips. The play of the day that I saw went to the aforementioned John Holgate for his 10-letter word EXCREMENTs wrapped around MEN. The out play of the day went to Rod Talbot who, when trailing Joanne Craig by 140, played out with VERIFIED for 176!
Chris May was deserving in victory, having wrapped up the tournament going into the last game (which he lost to Rod). In the game prior to that he managed five bingos against me in a 10 move per player game. One of these was the natural ROCKFISH, played off an R for 125 points, which he picked out of the bag after laying down BOTHyMAN. Luckily I was able to reply with SEAWEED!
Next year we hope to stage the event in the same venue. As the Indian Star has been a worthy supporter of Scrabble for some time now, it would be only fitting if players occasionally got along there for a meal, mentioning Scrabble to the management of course!
