80 doughty Scrabble players (including three novices) plus one doughtier TD and one Word-looker-upper-of-great-renown were gathered together last Sunday at Club Five Dock, a highly superior venue in the voiced opinions of many a player: we've booked it again for the first Sunday in March 2007, a date for your diaries ...
The founder of Balmain Scrabble Club, also known as the Balmain Union of Good Scrabblers, Michael Oxenburgh, died last month, and we honoured his memory with a minute's silence. During the day, quite a few Scrabblers recalled his generosity and humour and gentlemanly demeanour with pleasure: after all, if it were not for him, yesterday's tournament would not have happened....
I can tell you that after 8 games,
> in Recreation, Betty Hardy came first with 7 wins and having won the Highest Losing Game Award, while Margaret Clifford came second, also with 7 wins, and Greg Nicol came third with 6 wins;
> in Intermediate, Rocky Sharma came first with 7 wins and the highest rating gain of the day, + 83 ....Bravo, Rocky !! Gordon Meggs won 7 games and came second, and Denise Smith came third with 6 wins. The Highest Losing Game Award went to Esther Rolfe;
> in Advanced, three people won 6 games: first, Cheryl Michler, second, Nonie English and third, Margaret Berliner. The Highest Losing Game Award went to Bev Purkis;
> in Masters, four people won 6 games: first, Chris May, second, Rod Talbot, third, Edward Okulicz and fourth, Robin Duncan. Edward's was the Highest Losing Game: 492 against 519. (Edward wants you all to know about Rod's admirable GUANIDIN play....for what score I know not ... Bravo, Rod!)
Because I neglected to get myself a copy of the last score sheets, I cannot tell you who won the High Games and the High Word Scores: for these, and other omissions, I regret to confess, mea culpa, and I humbly beg your pardons. The results will eventually be posted ....and then we'll all know.
