Three states, NSW, Vic & SA chose Sunday 17.I.99 to hold their first 1999 tournaments......We at Baulkham Hills had a "very hot day" inside and out, South Australia described theirs as "....a very hot day" and Victoria reported their day as "pretty hot". This hot weather affected 205 keen Scrabble players, 94 in Vic, 44 in SA & 67 at Baulkham HIlls.
At the outset I would like to thank our crew as well as all the other players from the other Clubs who arrived early, and helped us to set up. The patience of our guests was greatly appreciated. Full marks to Frank Hunt our novice Tournament Director and his "guide for the day" Bob Jackman.
The heat did not help. This was coupled by players very frequently handing in their "incompleted" forms to a new director, who had to operate the computer system for the first time. The players handing in such forms came from all grades including Masters, one of which (a Master) "forgot to even hand it in". As I said earlier, we blame it on the heat of the day.
As expected this Tournament was treated by the "high rated" players as a last rehearsal prior to the coming Main Event....the City of Sydney Masters in 2 weeks time. They were nearly all present.
Three new novices entered the 4 equal divisions tournament (drawn starts, 8 games).
These were:
Hope Kidd who used to play tournaments in Kingston Jamaica, Beryl Luck, and Peggy
Womersley who is the Deputy Mayor of our Shire. All novices were from the Baulkham Hills
Club.
Besides the usual cash prizes for first, second and third in each division, other prizes
as follows were awarded:

Encouragent Award (Junior) to Stacey Lock Lee
Best Adult NOvice: {Peggy Womersley)
High word Trophies were awarded to:

Jan Serisier did a hat trick by winning: Ist place in her B division (6) out of 8 games, High game award....544 & the High Word award for "reedited".
In addition other High Game Trophy awards went to: A div to Paul Cleary, 529, Colleen Howie of C division and the Master of Ceremonies for the day (481) as well as to Veena Mohe D div with a total of 434.
Finally we wish all the entrants present who intend playing in the City of Sydney Masters the best of luck, and thank you everyone who visited us last Sunday. We shall always do our very best to return your compliments.
