Baulkham Hills Kick-Off Tournament - 21st January 2001

Report from Alan Gauci, Baulkham Hills Club President

"Kick-Off "tournaments mark the opening of the NSW competition season. By every indication this year's tourney augurs well for NSW. 87 players in four equal divisions ,contested the event which also celebrated the Centenary of the Australian Federation.

Two youngsters, 16 year old Chris May from the Balmain Club and 8 year old Alastair Richards from Queensland captured everyone's attention during the day. They both did extemely well.Chris May continued on with his rating winning streak which he started at his tournament debut at the "1999 Hills Open". Today he gained the 10th place on the NSW ladder. 8 year old Alastair is certainly a future champion. I deem it an honour to have been beaten by him. He posses a great vocabulary, can add up and take away quickly with a very impressive accuracy. Furthermore he is polite, humble and well behaved. He finished our game with 15 minutes still available on his clock.

Our visitors came from far and wide - Karen & Alastair Richards, Olga Visser and Ann Drew from Queensland, John Spaan from the ACT, Chris Phillips from Bowral, with many other players from Wollongong, Newcastle, the Central Coast , the Blue Mountains and the Sydney metro area.

Six new novices , five of which were from our Club and one from Waverley, (Basil Sands) also took part. Prior to the tournament, our Club's coach Robin Duncan suggested that Altaf Malik and Nana Nanayakkara should take part in the Advanced division. They did not let him down, with Altaf finishing 5th and a rating of 1326, while Nana came 14th, and rated as 1196. The dark horse novice was our Prassanna Nanayakkara who came first in the beginners section.
