The final event on the NSW Scrabble calendar was held yesterday when 76 players competed in the spacious, airy and hallowed environs of the Turramurra Uniting Church Hall.
After an initial delay when the draw was rearranged to compensate for the non-arrival of late entrant Patrick Berton, play proceeded at a cracking pace with several records being broken. Raya Wilkinson's four consecutive bingos OVERLIE, WREATHED, STRINGED and OFFLOADS will break the 2001 record of three held jointly by Edward Okulicz and Margaret Warmington. The highest combined game score of 997 recorded by Bob Jackman and Paul Cleary was broken when John Holgate and Peter Shaw notched up over 1070 for their game which also saw John taking the high game score of 632. Another apparent record for the highest non bonus word was 136 for QUAIS played by Maria Kaye. Not so noteworthy were my three attempts to play a bingo from ORENTE? I later discovered that THEREON, OFTENER AND ERODENT would have done the trick.
Our WSC contestants were farewelled in a short ceremony where they were presented with the good luck tokens of Aussie pens from the North Shore Scrabble Club. John explained that one of the main aims of the team was for them all to reach the top 30 so that Australia would qualify for a larger quota of contestants at the next World Championships.
The day's results saw the winners of three divisions on 7 games with Basil Sands taking the honours in D Division. Noteworthy results were achieved by the two novices Nyree Ellen and Ern Foster with four games each. Linda Dimond stole the show in C Division - not only with her colourful attire - but also for her high word, high game and third place. Final honours went to Denise Smith with 6 wins. In B Division Gary Pollard headed the field with 7 wins and a rating gain of 66 points. Gary may have been helped by the contents of a box that he carried back from the local "Theos" with John Barker! An excellent result was also achieved by Hari Nanayakkara who also gained 66 points. In A Division WSC players John and Rod performed well with John notching up the highest game and word score for the day, but it was former North Shore Club member Bob Jackman who raced two games ahead and won the tournament in convincing style. Bob has now hit the front as number one player in NSW. Well done Bob!
