Eight-seven players lined up at the convivial home of the W.O.R.D.S. Club to compete in the Marj Babb Shield teams' event as well as the four equal-numbers divisions. Proceeds of the raffle would provide help to get W.O.R.D.S. Club's two world representatives to Las Vegas in December. Visitors were able to view a laminated picture and story about them in the local Illawarra Mercury newspaper.
At the lunch break, tournament director Rene Chelton gleefully announced that ladies were ensconced in the top 3 positions of each division except for one interloping male. Naturally, this acted as a prod to some hurting male egos and sanity prevailed thereafter.
In A division, world rep John “wants to be a millionaire” Holgate suffered a loss to fellow local Ros “by any other name” Gibbons in game 2 before storming home to win all his remaining games. After 3 games, Ros shared the lead with Jean Mc”Fish”Giffen and Betty “what-could-have-been” Coleman. Betty lost her 4th game to John Holgate by 1 point, but claimed she saw a 2 point better move as soon as she hit the clock after her final move, with 4 minutes remaining. “Use it or lose it!” is my motto. In an unfortunate tournament for Betty, she suffered two other close losses of 14 and 21 points. Meanwhile, Wollongong’s other world rep, Rod “Captain Hook” Talbot was progressing with 4 straight wins until meeting Joan “always does well in Wollongong” Rosenthal who claimed her 5th straight win to push Rod back into 3rd place. 4th place was taken by Peter “distant” Shaw. I thought Kerry Constable’s high word NARQUOIS – (French adjective meaning mocking, malicious) was an absolute beauty.
Male pride was boosted in B division where evergreen Michael “Larry” Adler from Canberra triumphed over Richard “Opening Ceremony” Birch and Gordon “Ginger” Meggs. Overseas visitor, Ruth “I once beat Andrew Fisher” Macinerney, came 4th after gaining a startling 400+ rating points at the Victorian Championships.
In C division, St George stalwart Maureen Wilkins drew her first game against Sunny Wright and the half point proved vital in allowing her to win at the death. In the penultimate game, Rex Shakespeare and Mary Craven were leading the section before losing to Maureen and Peggy Womersley respectively.
Chris Phillips triumphed in D division from Jann Pincott, with Brian Irwin beating lovely local Lila Tucker in the final game to prevent a quinella for the ladies. Noelene Lee managed 4th on margin from the other 7 players who finished on 4 wins.
The Marj Babb Shield saw a closely fought battle throughout the day with the Blacktown team of Raya Wilkinson, Daphne Bezuidenhout, Peggy Womersley and Jann Pincott triumphing by one game over Sydney City and the A.C.T. with 18 wins in the best-3-results-per-round contest.
