Kempsey Challenge - February 10th 2002

This year's Kempsey Challenge attracted 40 players. 4 of the 40 were from Queensland and half of those four, Anne Drew and Faye Grose snared the top two placings in A Division. 2 players came down from Lismore and one of those, John Vanderbyl was runner up in B Division also gaining a handy 116 ratings points. 1 player joined in from Urunga where a small group meets on a regular basis and that player, Bob Cregan, won C Division. 1 player from Bellingen 2 from Port Macquarie and 3 from South West Rocks also took part, along with the usual travellers from Sydney and of course the locals who happened to organise the whole thing.

Diana Hilly from Blacktown Club took out B Division. She was originally drawn to play Frank Hunt in the final round, and Frank was forced to retire early due to a headache. When an incorrect result computer entry was detected, Section B was redrawn freeing Diana from the forfeit, and enabling her to pick up enough spread points to win that Division.

The winner of the Kempsey shield for the best finishing local was Joy Smith, for her fourth in B Division. Joy is the President of the Kempsey Club and she has assured me that next year the event will be spread over two days, to enable more games and and earlier departure from Kempsey on the Sunday. And hopefully it will be the weekend following the City of Sydney Masters.

Some players borrowed an ASPA (NSW) board during the lunch break to have a friendly team game alfresco under a large poinciana tree and overlooking the beautiful Macleay River. Unbeknowns to them some galahs were perched in the tree high above them and you guessed it, a dropping landed right on the double-letter score, narrowly missing tiles and players.

Rex Shakespeare rated 926 from the North Shore Club made the trip and was able to do considerable damage in A Division. His first victim of note was John Barker and two games later I was on the receiving end. John and I deduced we had been 'rexed*', the new verb rex being defined as to suffer defeat at the hands of a much less rated player.

It was great to see an increase in attendance from seasoned players in Sydney this year but disappointing that the Queenslanders stayed away this time. Maybe in 2003 we can get it together.
