The Friendship Room of Panthers Club Nova Newcastle hosted the 2002 Newcastle Scrabble tournament on Sunday July 28. 63 players from as far afield as Queensland and the ACT found their way to the venue, those from the South getting by the speed cameras but one carload of ladies was waylaid briefly by a breathalyser unit.
The 4 divisions were given a naval theme this year being named the Armada, Battleships, Cruisers and Destroyers.
Topping the ranks to become Admiral of the Armada was John Barker on margin difference from Queensland's Olga Visser with NSW number 1, Bob Jackman, finishing 3rd.
Ram Mohe captained the Battleships home clearly. Peggy Womersley and Helen Young filled the minors.
Cruising to a 72 point rating gain in C was Jacquelin Hochmuth from Newcastle player Marie-Louise Hirschfeld with 3rd placed Maureen Dobb outdoing the winner on ratings grabbing 79 extra for her efforts.
Presentations for the Destroyers division were missing just a little something after the 1st place trophy disappeared while on display outside the playing room. Chief Destroyer, with the best divisional record of 6.5/7, was Wendy Lee. A replacement trophy will be delivered to Wendy ASAP. Second placed Ann Moss nabbed 64 rating points with Newcastle stalwart Rosalie Tobin finishing 3rd.
