Forty players, including five interstaters, gathered for the annual shindig at Revesby but this time in the salubrious Waratah Room. John Holgate set an early target in the first round with a high game of 574 against Tony Hunt. John played five bingos: BIRDIES, CHINTZES, PINONES, INTIMAE, ENGRASP. The high game stood for the rest of the tournament.
Some interesting words played included SCIUROID (Esther Perrins), VACHERIN (John Holgate) and KINGSIDE (Rod Talbot) but the high word for the tournament went to Rod Talbot for OVERTAME,- 176 points - against Bob Jackman. In fact, that game was Bob's only loss from the first day's eleven games.
A prize was also given to the longest word of the tournament; it went to Penny Wells for the 11-letter word, QUESTIONING. Another near miss occurred when Jean McGiffen had to choose between scoring points in the game or prize-money! Jean played HEARTEN against Esther Perrins who promptly extended the word to DISHEARTEN. Jean held an S but the play was not worth the sacrifice.
Some non-bingo high scores also occurred. Gloria Gallagher scored 84 for SOAP (hooked onto AQUATIC with S on top central triple word square). This was later outdone by Betty Coleman who scored 103 for JOWs (s is on bottom central triple word square):
P A S S I N Z A g J O W sGary Pollard's title of giant-killer after his wins against Paul Cleary and John Holgate was short-lived when he lost two close end-games against Chris May, once when he missed an out-play of NIX and the other when he opened the board to allow Chris to bingo out, catch Gary with 11 points on his rack and win by 18.
Kris Logan suffered a little from bingo barrage in two successive games. In the first, Bob played 3 bingos in a row against her; he had a 4th on his rack that proved unplayable. In the next game, Kris played Jean McGiffen who played 4 bingos in a row and held a 5th unplayable.
Interestingly for a 20-game tournament there were no tied games but there were certainly several nail-biting finishes. Final placings saw Bob Jackman win with 17 games; Joan Rosenthal (who beat Bob in the last two Monarch of the Monolith games) was second with 16 wins; Paul Cleary took 3rd with 14 wins, just nudging out Rod Talbot also with 14 wins. Esther Perrins was 5th on 13 wins. The happiest player, though, was undoubtedly Norma Tracey who notched up a rating gain of 126 points (and a $75 prize for that gain).
