Of the 92, about 50 formed a melee on the street outside prior to 9am, because the licensed club which was to be the venue was not allowed to open it's doors until 9am, pending clearance of money from gaming machines. So at 9am there was a mad rush into the playing area, and everything was quickly set up for a close to 9.30 start as advertised.
The tournament ran very smoothly under the guidance of seemingly full-time director Wilma Vialle, everyone was fed a generous hot meal in the allotted time, and the event was wound up by 5.30.
Denise Smith and Trish Windhurst, the main organisers, are to be thanked for their efforts in organising the tournament on short notice. They must have found it a reasonably rewarding experience, as aleady they have claimed this same weekend for tournaments in future years.
Congratulations to the winners, especially Norma Tracey who broke through for a surprise win in Masters. She conquered John Holgate by 6 points in the final game to finish the only player on the day in Masters with 6 wins. Needless to say, she was overcome with excitement at the realisation she had not only won the event, but retrieved many of her lost rating points.

Well, what can I say! For something that wasn't going to happen until NEXT June we think our first tournament was a resounding success. 92 very happy Scrabblers gathered on a cold morning on the Scenic Central Coast to do battle over the boards. David Ragen told me he thought it was colder in Woy Woy than in the Blue Mountains. This I find hard to believe.
Firstly our sincere thanks to everyone who helped us get things set up. It was a bit of a scramble and a little chaotic at times but all came together in the end.
We welcomed 8 novices to the tournament, 6 from the local Woy Woy clubs, one from Maitland under the wing of Robyn Flynn, and June Coleman who I must apologise to for not knowing where she hails from.
In Masters Div, Norma Tracey had a return to form with six wins, she also had the highest rating gain of the day - 139 points. Coming in second was Bob Jackman, 5 wins and third, Joan Rosenthal, also with 5 wins.
Advances saw three of Scrabble's most stalwart players take out the honours. The ever popular Sunny Wright with 6 from 7 games was first, Daphne Bezuidenhout, also with 6 from 7, but a lower margin, and third was Judy McGuiness with 5 wins.
In Intermediate Div the "gentler" sex once again out-performed the "stronger" sex. Placing were Jann Pincott 1st, Sandra Elliott 2nd, and Sharon Sorensen 3rd.
And last, but by no means least, we come to Recreation Division. Janet Bor from Woy Woy club made a clean sweep with 7 wins, Anne Henderson (Newcastle) had 6 wins and another local, who I think is still flabbergasted (her word), Margaret Hynes came in third with 5 wins.
