W.O.R.D.S. Club welcomed three players from the new Nowra Club and four novices to our 8-game tournament. Two of them acquitted themselves extremely well in Recreation Division – Lexie Neal finished 5th while local Elle Proust won 6 from 8 to finish 2nd in her tournament debut. Elle is a 17-year old Smith’s Hill High School student and an optometrist’s daughter who has no trouble seeing words to play. Watch out Ed, Chris and David !
Congratulations to fast-improving Jyoti Chandra who chalked up her first, and probably, last win in Recreation before moving up into Intermediate Division. Local Merle Young clinched 3rd place, behind Elle, by toppling Jyoti in the final game. All three ended on 6 wins. Usually, High Game and High Word scores increase with each Division, but in this case Brian Irwin’s whopping 554 first-game score and Jyoti’s out-of-this-world “MARTIANS” for 116 points were bettered only in Masters Division.
In Intermediate, Sue Tuckett was thrilled to record her first ever clean sweep. (Some of us are still trying.) Sue and 2nd-place-getter Elisabeth Andrews will collect a motza of rating points. Betty Irwin kept “Kill” Bill Condon and “Boy” George Khamis out of 3rd place and should be able to share a few happy tales with husband Brian on the car trip home to Ulladulla. Congratulations to Daphne Bezuidenhout who celebrated her 1000th game and received her “club” badge.
Advanced Division saw two escapees from Masters Division steal the first two places. Alison Pollard triumphed but Audrey Newman stopped a Pollard double by beating Gary in the final game. David More sneaked past the stricken Gary to take 3rd spot with the Pollard’s Wollongong host, Jean Balmer grabbing 5th spot.
John Holgate finished out of the placings in Masters but managed to snare both the High Game and High Word awards. His first game against unlucky Moana Nepia saw a combined total of 1008, with John getting 633 of them. However, fresh Wollongong import Ed Oculicz overtook him on margin by game 2 and went on to record the day’s second clean sweep to finish ahead of Joanne Craig and Jan Serisier. Joanne played WANKIEST against Peter Shaw who I understand replied with an even ruder word. Neither managed to prudently front-hook the word with an S before completing the game. Jan Serisier showed off her true ability after an earlier trouncing by Ed by finishing strongly to snatch 3rd place in a strong field.
Novelty prizes were also awarded for the highest non-bingos starting with the letters comprising the word WORDS. Hanne Marks scored 54 for WHIPS after Keith Bioletti had ironically scored 44 for WORDS. Natalie Tadday scored 47 for OAK, Gary Pollard 36 for ROWING, Margaret Berliner 78 for DAZERS and Jean Noonan 78 for SWIZ.
Ed was kind enough to shout six of us dessert from his winnings during our apres-tournament celebratory dinner at a nearby Vietnamese restaurant. Naturally, many anagram challenges were issued before each spicy dish was served. Did you know that there are three 7-letter words containing the letters in JYOTI ? (JOINTLY, JOLLITY and JOLTILY). There are seven 8-letter words with TALBOT, five 8-letter words with BARKER, twenty-five with GRAEME and only one with JANINE.
