Thirty-eight players contested this year's October Marathon.
The early leaders after three rounds were Moana Nepia and George Khamis who had won all their games. George played the impressive HOGWEED to clinch his fourth win in a row. In the upset of the day George managed to tip out Paul Cleary, our WSC rep, by a few points (with a little help from the unchallenged FOULERS*).
Bob Jackman took over the running after lunch but soon the ever consistent NSW champ Ed Okulicz made his presence felt and headed the field for most of the tourney. With three of the twelve ganes to go Ed was three up and holding a handy lead on spread.
I reminded him of the fickleness of the tile gods (or godesses?) recalling my loss of three in a row to give the summer Masters to Paul Cleary some years ago. He assured me he only did that in Victoria.
Then the unthinkable happened - losses to Paul and Joanne meant Ed needed to win the last against a resurgent Esther. Sequential blanks and a nice play of TETRADIC on a triple gave her the title.
Well done, Esther.
Joanne Craig was second, Ed third, Joan Rosenthal fourth and Graeme Lock Lee fifth. John Barker topscored with 584 and Krystyna Batten won the high game award for WEAVINGS (158).
George Khamis finally ended up on 7/12 - a great effort - and the ratings prize (+140).
Nice Try of the Day Award went to Peter Shaw for his VIAGRAS*/ ESTRONES. It scored well and Pete was a bit deflated when it came off. Incidentally VIAGRAS* combines with D E H T(2) and VIAGRA* with C and D#.
Other top moves were Esther's TAILGATES around TE, Paul's CYTASTER/IMAGINAL and Ed's TROILISM - Ian Close challenged the word then informed the adjudicator what it meant - 'playing a game of Scrabble with three people'. Maybe Ian just needed the walk to the table for the exercise.
