The location of the club belied the atmosphere within, as the Rembrandt Club turned out to be a fascinating insight into the Dutch, their food, their drink and their customs. The playing area was cosy yet airy, the service from the voluntary Rembrandt staff first class. Those that stayed away can kick themselves for missing out on a Scrabble experience with a difference.
The only hiccup of the day occurred when it was discovered the power cord for the tournament laptop was not with the equipment. Luckily George Khamis came to the rescue with his laptop, and under the professional guidance of TD Fred Reynolds the event was able to get under way only about 15 minutes past scheduled starting time.
Arie's novelty prizes for each round turned out to be quite novel indeed. The ones I remember were a word with three Is, a word with 4 Es, a word with 6 consonants and to beat them all a word with 4 As. Needless to say no-one won any novelty prizes and the fledgling club was able to keep the prize-money on offer.
But a hearty thanks to the enthusiastic Arie Holla, creator of Australia's largest Scrabble Board, and convenor of two Scrabble clubs 20km apart, and his band of helpers for putting on a day with a difference.
