After some minor adjustments to the draw to cater for three unregistered players the tournament proceeded smoothly with 90 players from Sydney, Victoria, ACT, Ulladulla and the Central Coast. Amazing nonagenarian Lan Knox was made very welcome at her annual tournament appearance. The major talking point of the day was the appearance of the large and striking trophy donated by Arie Holla and destined to be presented to the winner of the Recreation Division at each tournament.
Lisa Peterson in Intermediate gained the most rating points clocking up a record 220. She was followed by Fay Fisher with 130 and Therese Newman with 85. Lone novice Suzanne Edwards performed very creditably with three games gaining 74 points.
In Recreation Division the placings were decided on margins with Rosalie Tobin (1), Michael Rutkowski (2) and Fay Fisher (3) all winning 5.5 games. In Arie Holla’s absence Rosalie was presented with the Trophy by Tony Hunt and the event was suitably captured for posterity by eager photographers. Ngaire Ellen from the Turramurra Club took out both the high game (511) and high word (HEAVIEST 104) prizes. Lan Knox won four games in fine style.
The honours in the Intermediate Division went to Lisa Peterson (7 games), Frank Tao (6 games) and Daphne Bezuidenhout (5 games) with Gordon Meggs winning the high game (472) and Betty Hardy winning the high word with ABASHED (110). In Advanced Division Therese Newman was the definitive winner with all 7 games while Maureen Hilder outranked Cheryl Michler on margin with 5 games each. Bev Purkis had the high game of 487 and Ann Fiddler the high word JIBES for 117.
It was a similar result in Masters Division with Edward Okulicz taking the honours with all 7 games – and the high game record for the day of 562 – followed by Chris May and Joan Rosenthal both on 5 games. Joan’s NATURALS for 122 was the highest word for the day. Edward’s win places him at number 2 in Australia.
Jenny Templeton went home $100 richer with the main raffle prize, I won the wine pack and Hanne Marks the bottle of bubbly. Congratulations to all the winners, thanks to the members of the Turramurra Club who once again excelled themselves in the cooking department and thanks to all who helped make the tournament so enjoyable.
