47 players turned out for this, the 2nd annual Winter Challenge, and although numbers were down on last year's 64 a great tournament was had by all, irrespective of winning or losing. Game 1 saw 15 of the top (rated) half (23) win, but only one of the top five managed to win, in fact one of those five went straight to last place with her losing margin of 177. The lead changed with each game early on, before Sharon Sorensen attained it and led into games 6 & 7. Donna McDonald then weaved her magic to take the lead and hold it for most of the time, only being interrupted by Wayne Jones (all the way from South West Rocks NSW north coast) going into games 10 & 14 and the final game (16), with the final place getters hot on their heels. Going into the final game the first five positions could have gone to any of the then 7 top placings, who, all but one was playing each other.
The final top five Wayne Jones, Donna McDonald, Colleen Walker, Evelyn Goh, and Sharon Sorensen are now eligible to enter the Winter Masters next weekend and all but Evelyn have jumped at the chance. Wayne also took the high word and game score records in game 3, the word score held out but Pat Schuberg bettered Wayne's 525 in game 11 with her 545 game. Don Hadley, from Newcastle, was our only novice and at the end of day 1 was pleased to have a tentative rating of 1152 and was just as pleased at the end of proceedings to have achieved a first tournament rating of 1067. Jyoti Chandna was delighted with her ratings gain of 109 and Colleen Walker was ecstatic about her 143 (highest) ratings gain. Best performance in ratings bands awards were also given to: upto 700 rating, Don Hadley and 701 to 900 Jyoti Chandna. Our youngest player, year 12 student, Elle Proust was also very pleased with her 8 wins and rating gain of 85.
