For the second year, the Wyong Scrabble Club held their tournament at the Wyong Race Club. Although the number of players was down from previous years due to Easter and the National Championships being held in Hobart next weekend, those who attended had a wonderful day of scrabble.
3 games were played in the morning with plenty of food between games and then all went downstairs for a buffet luncheon of salads, chicken and ham. 4 games were played in the afternoon and thanks to Fred Reynold’s quick turnaround of games we were finished by 5:15 and most people were on their way home shortly thereafter.
In the Masters division, Robyn Flynn came 1st with 2nd and 3rd places taken out by Tony Hunt and Therese Newman who will venture to Hobart this week hoping to do as well there.
Advanced division was won by Wayne Jones, from the Kempsey Club, who arrived late with only 8 minutes left on his clock (and he won the game!!). Wayne also won high word and high game. 2nd place was won by Liz Jackman who will also be travelling to Hobart this week. 3rd place was won by Gaile Clark, our visitor from Queensland.
Intermediate division was won by Sherie Brown from the Kempsey Club who also won the guessing competition of how many eggs were in a container. Sherie also won the award for high word. 2nd place was won by Colleen Walker who will be on her way to Hobart; 3rd place was won by Maureen Dobb, a member of the Wyong Scrabble Club.
Recreational was won by Stephanie Muldoon, daughter of Denise Smith and sister of Mark Smith. 2nd place went to Karmel Patterson who also won the door prize of a travel scrabble set. Jan Consoli, competing in her 1st tournament took out 3rd. Well done Jan – we hope to see you at more tournaments in the future.
This year we gave a novelty prize and cash to those players who came last in each division. Each player was gracious in their acceptance of the wooden spoon award and it was cause for laughter on their part as each accepted the award.
