2006 Kick Off was held at Baulkham Hills yesterday. 80 had registered by late Saturday and only 1 dropped out due to a savage sounding bout of flu.
In D section Francis De Lange was unavoidably held up and arrived fractionally late, so was put in as a bye. Game 2 she still had a Bye as she was mistakenly omitted from the draw. However, that didn't stop her notching up a massive 513 high game in her division, surpassed only by Bob Jackman in A with 561.
High words were also recorded in lower divisions. Hazel Knudsen in D came third and also took (with obvious delight) high ratings gain with a neat 100pts northward. Meanwhile in A the strategically placed Louise Kobler went up 96pts. Glen Dunlop from Canada is a regular visitor this time of year and graced us with his presence while he got used to playing British words such as QI and ZO.
Elsewhere, the game of Roosters and Feather Dusters was being played out with many upsets. We have all been there.
All hail to Wilma Vialle who did such a stirling job on the draws and running of the event that we were finished, cleaned up and out of there before 5pm (too early for the Bull and Bush restaurant to let us have the menu – anagramming quickly took root).
The Junior Open was held in the next room with 25 contestants, some of whom we can no doubt expect to see on the regular circuit in the future. I will try to get a report from that event. Janice Hoon directed and was ably assisted by Serena Guild, Sue Whelan and Robin Duncan and I think I saw Alan Gauci in there at one stage.
