We decided against attempting to set up an internationally rated section, and opted to spread the internationals through the top three sections, using existing international ratings and known ratings in home countries. Judging by the results we weren't too far out with our seedings, althoug the Malaysian youths in B Division did fill the top three placings.
It was great to see Siva Sivapalasundram back at a NSW tournament after a long absence, although it transpired he was only on a two week work assignment and so did not have to apply for a domestic leave pass. When the cat's away...
In general our local players were most tolerant of our visitors. One of my opponents had his mobile phone switched on and ringing, while another youth in Masters insisted on lumping his monstrous square rotating board around and replacing anchored flat rotators with it. Conversations were had and tiles were rattled as announcements were made, but in fairness some couldn't hear what was being said, and in some cases, couldn't understand the language.
My opening game against Moana was interesting. My tracking showed three tiles unaccounted for yet there were only two on Moana's rack, one of which I thought had to be the blank. When I played out, she revealed an N and a T, but no blank. A short search resulted in the blank being stuck on the flat board, not having made the trip into the bag at start of play!
Colleen Hood was a notable winner in Recreation. Colleen, originally from the Woy Woy club, migrated to Tamworth five years ago and established a successful club up there, but has returned to the Central Coast to be nearer family, and Scrabble action as well presumably. Colleen collected the giant Arie Holla Recreational trophy for her success on the day.
Post-tournament celebrations were restricted to the confines of the club, where a live group was churning out golden oldies. The few of us that stayed on won't forget the vision of Peter Shaw dancing cheek to cheek with the attractive blonde lead singer, at her insistence.
The corresponding tournament next year will be a two day event, to be known as the Central Coast Championships. The hospitality is great at Woy Woy and the venue is first class and interstaters could do well to think about attending that one.
Particular thanks go to prime mover Denise Smith for her meticulous planning and lead organistion of the Central Coast tournament,
