Forty long-distance Scrabble players contested this year’s marathon. Michael Hornung from Victoria was our interstate visitor and there was a goodly sprinkling of top-rated locals.
Karen Richards, Paul Cleary and Bob Jackman were the pacesetters. In round 5 I met Chris May (also on 3/1) and after my 34-point win he berated the unpropitious tile gods. Famous last words! Chris won his last seven games to storm home in a blaze of glory including two 600+ games (621 and 698 against Greg Pinchbeck – a new national record containing 6 bingos – COHEIRS CONDORES MAUSOLEA BANTERED INFLATED and INFLATE but no nine-timer). He fell short of the magic 700 only scoring 6 with his U. Yes Virginia, there are propitious tile gods after all…
Bob Jackman continued his fine form by grabbing the silver and Paul Cleary the bronze. Karen Richards was fourth and Michael Hornung fifth.
Peter Shaw high-word scored with 122 for DAINTIES and Krystyna Batten won the ratings prize (+89).
The Jammy Bastard award goes to Rex Shakespeare – not only for his 486/343 ‘granny’ against me but also for playing DEGUSTED to win against Janine Whittaker. Rex savoured his victory without having the faintest idea it was a word – how degusting.
Bob Jackman’s winning endgame play against me was particularly smart. 37 points down he found SIRIHS/CH/EXPOS for 61 and a 9 point victory. I was so impressed I missed a draw with ELHI/EXPOSE on the triple. In a subsequent game Bob played DESPOTA onto TE (DESPOTATE) for 95 and set up VENTURI holding N for VENTURING (39) later down to the TWS – nothing VENTURI-ed nothing gained…
In spite of the sweltering heat and the pother of moving the furniture out and back at the downtown ‘no frills’ Macarthur Room a good time was had by all. My suggestion for next time is a water bottle runner to do the rounds of the tables with cold refreshments and a towel – as is customary in traditional marathons.
As a footnote, the word TAPDANCE* was disallowed. Discussion over morning coffee revealed that RAPDANCE* LAPDANCE* or POLEDANCE* are not acceptable either - although LAPDANCES* does have an anagram...
