Turramurra Club Tournament Report - 15th November 2006

Arie Holla's "Scrabble on Wheels" was one of the talking points at the tournament last Saturday. Sixty six players competed at the Masonic Function Centre which was generally thought to be an improvement on the Uniting Church Hall venue of yesteryear. Reduced numbers (was this due to an over abundance of tournaments on the calendar?) necessitated a split into three divisions and the results gave a clear indication that it was "Ladies Day" at the Mason's Hall. Eleven of the fifteen possible prize-winners were women.

Veena Mohe took the honours in C division winning all seven games by a large margin with Maureen Dobb pipping Frank Hunt at the post for second position. Nick Cavenagh won the High Game award with a massive 520 and Linda Hawkes gained rating points and some cash for the word "Shaving"(96). The three novices Ann Luke, Bronwyn Pinchbeck and Matt Fenimore enjoyed their first tournament and notched up a few games for their record sheets.

In B Division first place was hotly contested with Maureen Hilder narrowly beating Therese Newman on margin after winning six games. Ann Fiddler, in third position on five games, was relieved to gain the rating points necessary to pass the coveted 1200 mark. Turramurra Club member Linda Dimond, also with five games, just missed out on a prize. Ann Fiddler won High Game with 481 and Colleen Walker "Powered" her way to score 114 for the High Word.

In A Division Joan Rosenthal was the outright winner with six games followed by a closely fought tussle with four players on five games. Rod Talbot and Joanne Craig eventually passed the post on margin with Rod scoring the highest game for the day -533. There was a tie for the High Word prize with Joanne's word "Inflamed" and David More's "Zingiest" each scoring 106 points.

In the absence of a "Recreation" Division the Arie Holla trophy was returned to the incumbent.

Therese Newman went home with an early Christmas present - the popular $100 raffle prize, Gordon Meggs won the double pack of vino and Kris Logan - who is definitely not a sweet tooth - reluctantly accepted the chocolates.

Thanks to all the helpers - both club members and others - who assisted in ensuring the smooth running of the tournament.

Happy Christmas to all.
